Frequently Asked Questions

What is Microsoft Outlook Web Access?

Microsoft Outlook™ Web Access is a web browser-based e-mail client designed to work with your Microsoft Exchange mail server mailbox. Microsoft Outlook Web Access is not a replacement for the Outlook and Exchange mail clients, but rather increases the remote access options available to Exchange mail server users. Microsoft Outlook Web Access gives Exchange users the ability to check their e-mail from any supported web browser.

Who can use Microsoft Outlook Web Access?

Microsoft Outlook Web Access can be used by any Pacific University staff or faculty member with an Exchange mail server mailbox. Only university staff and faculty may have an Exchange mail server account. If you do not have an account, but would like to have one set up, please contact the Technology Information Center at 503-352-3132 or help@pacificu.edu.

What is the preferred web browser for accessing Outlook Web Access?

To use Microsoft Outlook Web Access, you must have an Exchange mail server mailbox. You must also use one of the following web browsers: Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 (or higher), Firefox 1.0 (or higher), or Netscape Navigator 6 (or higher). Other browsers may work, but are unsupported. We recommend Internet Explorer 6.0; but with all the security risks associated with that browser, you may want to use Firefox.

There are two versions of OWA: the rich version and the reach version. The version that you use depends on the web browser that you use to access OWA. If you use Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 for Windows or later, you receive the rich version. If you use Internet Explorer 4.02 or earlier, or any other standard web browser on a PC, Mac, or Unix based computer, you receive the reach version.

The rich version supports proprietary "rich" features, such as dynamic HTML (DHTML), the Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning (WebDAV) protocol, XML, and Extensible Stylesheet Language (XSL). Internet Explorer 5.0 and later are considered "rich" browsers.

The reach version does not support these extended feature sets but does support basic capabilities, such as HTML 3.2 and European Computer Manufacturers Association (ECMA) script standards. Internet Explorer 4.02 and earlier versions of Internet Explorer, as well as Firefox and Netscape Navigator, are considered reach browsers.

The reach version uses a simpler user interface than the rich version because it was designed for browsers that do not have proprietary DHTML and XML support.

Some of the extended features available in the rich version of Outlook Web Access (Internet Explorer 5.0 for Windows and higher) include:
